Current Work~
My current work is a fusion of black porcelain and white stoneware, creating a striking palette of high contrast. The expressive brush marks are a nod to Asian art. This work is not just about aesthetics but also about functionality and purpose, a snapshot of my ongoing ceramic journey, investigating functionality and purpose. Other work has examples of how fabrics can be pressed into clay like lace, doilies, and sweaters. These works portray something beyond a functional object with layers of meaning. In psychology, traditional objects, like a soft sweater or blanket, are known as a way to provide a sense of comfort or safety. These are the feelings I want my pottery to offer. In addition to pottery, abstract drawing, watercolors, and painting encompass a significant part of my practice. I always want my work to engage in a visual dialogue with the viewer. By using layers of paint and chalk, ladders, popular icons, and symbols, I open the invitation to this conversation. Painting and mark-making give me a sense of freedom that I often see in my student's eyes. Without thinking, young children make. They naturally react to paint and watercolor that I observe and want to feel. Adding layers of watercolors, paint, chalk, gloss, and marker pens to wood panels gave me a sense of freedom in joy. |
