Current Work~
My current work is a fusion of black porcelain and white stoneware, creating a striking palette of high contrast. The expressive brush marks are a nod to art from East Asian cultures, the birthplace of ceramics. This work is not just about aesthetics but also about functionality and purpose. It is. It is a snapshot of my ongoing ceramic journey, which investigates functionality and purpose. I use lace, doilies, and sweaters to show fine details of the fabrics pressed into the soft clay before firing. These artworks represent more than just functional objects; they embody deeper layers of meaning. Psychologically, worn items like a soft sweater or a traditional Yukata in Japan are celebrated for their ability to provide comfort. This notion of comfort is a central theme in my work, inviting viewers to reflect on what truly brings them solace. In addition to pottery, abstract drawing, watercolors, and painting encompass a significant part of my practice. I always want my work to engage in a visual dialogue with the viewer. By using layers of paint and chalk, ladders, popular icons, and symbols, I open the invitation to this conversation. Painting and mark-making give me a sense of freedom that I often see in my student's eyes. Without thinking, young children make. They naturally react to paint and watercolor that I observe and want to feel. Adding layers of watercolors, paint, chalk, gloss, and marker pens to wood panels gives me a sense of freedom with experimentation. |
